Belanda Hitam: The African-Indo Legacy
Between 1831 and 1872, Ghanaian soldiers enlisted in the KNIL, journeyed across the Indian Ocean to Java, married Indonesian women, and established a vibrant Afro-Indo heritage in Purworejo. Following the revolution, they repatriated to the Netherlands, settling in Vianen and beyond. We honor our Afro-Indo brothers and sisters—where Ashanti Adinkra motifs meet Javanese Batik.

Born in Bali to an Indonesian mother and a Dutch father, Melati began climate activism at age 12. She co-founded "Bye Bye Plastic Bags" and Youthtopia, leading global youth movements, speaking before the UN General Assembly and World Economic Forum.

Originating in Surabaya and relocating to Breda in 1957, the four Tielman brothers (Andy, Reggy, Ponthon, Loulou) stunned Europe with their acrobatic musicianship, playing electric guitars behind their backs and with their teeth years before Jimi Hendrix.

Knight of the Military Order of William (Militaire Willems-Orde)
Recruited from Elmina on the Gold Coast (modern Ghana) in 1869 to serve in the KNIL in Java. Renowned for supreme courage and leadership, he was knighted with the Military Order of William in 1878. His iconic oil portrait in full uniform hangs in Museum Bronbeek.

Born in Surabaya, Wieteke created the iconic character "Tante Lien" on Dutch television. Through unforgettable songs, cooking stories, and warmth, she comforted hundreds of thousands of repatriated Indos and preserved the Indische culture and eetcultuur for future generations.

Trailblazing Author & Literary Voice of the Second Generation
Psychologist, documentary filmmaker, and celebrated writer. Her landmark 1983 novel "Geen gewoon Indisch meisje" gave words to the unspoken emotions, displacement, and proud hybrid identity of the second generation. Awarded the Constantijn Huygens Prize in 2022.
