Culinarily, it is the soul of teh melati (jasmine tea), a fragrant staple that has defined Indonesian hospitality for centuries, its scent instantly evoking memories of the motherland. Yet, its cultural weight extends far beyond the kitchen. Every year on 15 August, the melati is worn at the Indisch Monument in The Hague to commemorate the end of WWII in the Dutch East Indies, honoring the victims of the Japanese occupation, the Bersiap period, and the subsequent diaspora.
