Every year on the 15th of August, the Indische community gathers at the Indisch Monument in The Hague. The Melati (white jasmine) is worn over the heart as a symbol of respect, resilience, and remembrance. It marks the official end of the Second World War in the Dutch East Indies in 1945, honoring all victims of the Japanese occupation, the internment camps, and the subsequent period of the Bersiap. This design strips the Melati down to its essential five petals, set against the structured, monumental lines of the memorial. It serves as a daily, quiet acknowledgment of the documented history that shaped the Indo-European diaspora.
