Wawa Aba & Melati Heritage Patch

Between 1831 and 1872, approximately 3,000 West African men, primarily from Elmina, Ghana, were recruited into the KNIL. Settling in Purworejo, Central Java, they married Javanese and Indo women, founding a unique Afro-Indo community known as the Belanda Hitam. This patch unites two profound symbols of this dual heritage. At the center is the Wawa Aba, an Adinkra symbol representing the seed of the wawa tree—a testament to unparalleled hardiness, toughness, and perseverance. It is embraced by a wreath of Melati (Javanese jasmine), honoring the Javanese matriarchs who nurtured these families. A tribute to the resilience of a community that survived empires, oceans, and exile to build a lasting legacy.
