For the Indo community, the white jasmine (Jasminum sambac) carries a profound duality. On one hand, it is the comforting, fragrant soul of Teh Melati—the jasmine tea brewed in our grandparents' kitchens, representing hospitality and the flavors of the archipelago. On the other, it is the solemn emblem of the Indische Herdenking. Every 15th of August, the melati is worn at the Indisch Monument in The Hague to commemorate all victims of the war in Asia, the camps, the Bersiap period, and the subsequent repatriation. This vintage label design honors both realities: the warmth of our culinary heritage and the enduring resilience of our ancestors.
