Schattenberg 1951 Heritage Patch

In the spring of 1951, approximately 12,500 Moluccans—KNIL soldiers and their families—were brought to the Netherlands by order of the Dutch government. Upon arrival, they were housed in 'woonoorden' (residential camps), many of which were former concentration or labor camps. Woonoord Schattenberg, formerly Kamp Westerbork, became the largest of these settlements. Despite the bitter cold, the isolation, and the deep betrayal of unfulfilled political promises regarding an independent Republic of South Maluku (RMS), the first generation built a tight-knit community. This patch features the Sago palm—the ultimate symbol of Moluccan sustenance and deep roots—standing resilient. It is a museum-grade tribute to the endurance of our grandparents, whose strength laid the foundation for the Moluccan diaspora today.
