In 1831, the first West African soldiers (mostly Ashanti and Fante) arrived in the Dutch East Indies, eventually forming a unique Indo-African garrison community in Purworejo, Central Java. Through intermarriage with Javanese and Indo families, a distinct Belanda Hitam (Black Dutchman) culture emerged, blending West African roots with Javanese daily life. Food became the profound language of this union.
