The Sankofa bird is a powerful Adinkra symbol from the Akan people of Ghana, translating to 'it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.' For the Belanda Hitam—the Afro-Indo descendants of West African soldiers who settled in Purworejo, Java, in the 19th century—this symbol represents a deep connection to ancestral roots.
