The Cultural Story
In the Akan tradition of West Africa—the ancestral homeland of many Belanda Hitam (Afro-Indo) families—the Sankofa bird symbolizes the importance of returning to one's roots to fetch what was left behind. In the Indo diaspora, there is another sacred tradition: going back to return the plastic 'bakjes' (containers) your Oma sent you home in after a family rijsttafel. The West African soldiers recruited into the KNIL between 1831 and 1872 settled in Purworejo, blending their Ghanaian heritage with Javanese and Indische culture. Today, the Afro-Indo community shares the same universal diaspora love language: food. This design playfully bridges the profound Adinkra philosophy of Sankofa with the deeply relatable, everyday reality of Indische family hospitality.
