The Cultural Story
The Salawaku is the traditional hourglass-shaped shield of the Moluccas, historically carried by Cakalele warriors. Adorned with intricate mother-of-pearl motifs, it represents strength, protection, and ancestral pride. In 1951, approximately 12,500 Moluccan KNIL soldiers and their families were brought to the Netherlands by order of the Dutch government, expecting a temporary stay. Housed in former concentration camps like Vught and Westerbork (renamed Schattenberg), their temporary exile became permanent. This emblem honors the quiet dignity, deep roots, and unyielding resilience of the first generation, whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the vibrant Moluccan diaspora today.
