Between 1945 and 1965, over 300,000 Indische Nederlanders repatriated to a Netherlands many had never seen. Housed in sterile, chilly 'contractpensions' (boarding houses), first-generation arrivals faced strict assimilation rules and unfamiliar, bland Dutch food. Yet, behind closed doors, the resilience of the Indo community thrived through cooking. The enamel rantang (tiffin carrier) became a symbol of shared warmth. Families would sneak spices into their rooms, cooking rice, sambal, and rendang on small petroleum stoves to share with fellow repatriates. This steaming rantang represents the fierce preservation of our culinary heritage, proving that while our ancestors had to pack their lives into wooden crates, they never left their flavors behind.
