The Cultural Story
In 1667, the Treaty of Breda settled a global conflict with a historic exchange: the British ceded the tiny, nutmeg-rich island of Pulau Run in the Banda Sea to the Dutch in exchange for a distant North American settlement called New Amsterdam—now known as Manhattan. This embroidered emblem of a cracked nutmeg revealing its crimson mace (fuli) honors the immense, often brutal, weight of the Maluku islands in shaping the modern world. It is a reminder that the flavors in our heritage kitchens were once the most fiercely contested treasures on earth.
