The Belanda Hitam (Afro-Indo) community traces its roots to the West African soldiers recruited into the KNIL between 1831 and 1872. Settling in Purworejo, Central Java, these men from Elmina married Javanese and Indo women, creating a unique blended culture that eventually repatriated to Dutch cities like Vianen in the 1950s. Food has always been the ultimate unifier in this diaspora. Just as Indonesian sambal brings the heat to a rijsttafel, Ghanaian shito (a rich, dark pepper sauce) represents the deep West African roots of the ancestors.
