Between 1945 and 1965, over 300,000 Indo-Europeans made the monumental journey across the ocean to the Netherlands. They arrived in a freezing country, often housed in strict contract pensions. While they could only bring a few cubic meters of belongings in their wooden crates and suitcases, the most essential items weren't just warm clothes—they were the flavors of home. Spices, recipes, and the indispensable sambal became tools of resilience, a way to keep their tropical heritage alive and their bodies warm in the bitter European winters.
