The Cultural Story
In the late 1950s and 60s, thousands of Dutch-Indo families crossed the Atlantic to start over a second time, settling in Southern California and around Grand Rapids, Michigan. They traded bicycles for station wagons and the Dutch polder for the Pacific Coast Highway. Yet, no matter how American the zip code, the community stayed connected through massive Indo picnics, church gatherings, and Pasar Malam-style events in local parks and community halls. This typography-led poster merges the iconic mid-century American highway sign with the ultimate Indo destination. It’s an affectionate nod to the Amerindo families who would happily drive three hours down the 405 just to get a decent slice of spekkoek and hear a kroncong band.
