The Cultural Story
The Melati (white jasmine) is the enduring symbol of the Indische community, worn every 15 August to commemorate the end of WWII in the Dutch East Indies, the camps, the Bersiap, and the subsequent diaspora. But the story of the Indo diaspora is also one of incredible cultural resilience. In the late 1950s, displaced Indisch youth in the Netherlands channeled their complex history into a revolutionary new sound: Indo-rock. Fusing Hawaiian melodies, krontjong rhythms, and rock 'n' roll, bands with tape-echo guitars laid the foundation for European pop music. This design unites the quiet reverence of the Melati with the loud, defiant energy of the Indo-rock generation—a tribute to those who survived and the culture they built.
