The Cultural Story
In the late 1950s, displaced Indische and Moluccan youths in the Netherlands channeled their grief, resilience, and tropical roots into a revolutionary new sound: Indo-rock. Debuting on international stages like the 1958 Brussels Expo, bands fused Hawaiian melodies, krontjong rhythms, and American rock 'n' roll into something fiercely their own. This 'Melati Reverb' design merges the iconic electric guitar with the white jasmine (Melati)—the symbol of the Indische Herdenking on 15 August. It honors how our pioneers used blistering guitar riffs and tape echoes not just to entertain, but to forge a powerful new identity after surviving the war in Asia, the Bersiap, and a cold repatriation. Music was our survival.
