Kampung Afrikan 1831 Heavyweight Tee

In 1831, the first recruits of what would become a 3,000-strong West African force in the KNIL arrived in the Dutch East Indies. Predominantly Ashanti and Fante men from Elmina, present-day Ghana, they were stationed in Purworejo, Central Java. Here, they built their lives, intermarrying with Javanese and Indo-European women and establishing a vibrant community in an area locally known as 'Kampung Afrikan'. These families—the Belanda Hitam—forged a unique Afro-Indo culture, blending West African resilience with Javanese grace. Following Indonesian independence, many of these families repatriated to the Netherlands, settling in towns like Vianen. This design intertwines the Adinkra symbol of spiritual supremacy with the Indonesian jasmine, honoring a profound, documented history of diaspora, survival, and blended heritage.
