The Cultural Story
The Gye Nyame is arguably the most recognizable Adinkra symbol from the Ashanti and Fante peoples of present-day Ghana. It translates to 'except for God'—symbolizing supreme power and fearlessness. Between 1831 and 1872, some 3,000 West African soldiers joined the KNIL, eventually settling in Purworejo, Central Java, and intermarrying with local Javanese and Indo families. For their descendants, the Belanda Hitam (Afro-Indo) community, this symbol is a proud mark of heritage. We’ve given it a classic Indische family twist: true fearlessness means respecting the supreme power of the household. You fear no one in this world, except, of course, your Oma.
