Elmina to Purworejo 1831 Heavyweight Tee

In 1831, the Dutch East Indies Army began recruiting soldiers from Elmina on the Gold Coast (modern-day Ghana). Approximately 3,000 West African men, predominantly of Ashanti and Fante descent, sailed to Java. Stationed primarily in the garrison town of Purworejo, they put down roots, intermarrying with Javanese and Indo-European families. Known as the Belanda Hitam (Black Dutchmen), this unique Afro-Indo community forged a distinct cultural identity that blended West African resilience with Javanese grace. Following Indonesian independence, many families repatriated to the Netherlands in the 1950s, settling in towns like Vianen. This design honors their transatlantic and trans-Indian Ocean journey—a testament to a proud, enduring diaspora.
