Between 1831 and 1872, approximately 3,000 West African soldiers were recruited from Elmina, Ghana, to serve in the Dutch East Indies army. They formed a tight-knit garrison community in Purworejo, Central Java, intermarrying with Javanese and Indo families. Following Indonesian independence, these families repatriated to the Netherlands, with many settling in the town of Vianen. This globe-spanning migration tells a profound story of resilience, adaptation, and blended heritage.
