Stepping off ships like the Johan van Oldenbarnevelt into the bitter European winter was a profound physical shock. Families arriving in Rotterdam or Amsterdam often wore multiple layers of summer clothing, hastily adapting to the freezing temperatures in drafty contract pensions. This design is an affectionate nod to that first generation's resilience and the enduring Indo trait of being a 'koukleum'—someone who is always cold. Decades later, we might have proper winter coats, but the defrosting process continues.
