Belanda Hitam Typographic Dad Hat

Between 1831 and 1872, around 3,000 West African men, primarily from Elmina in present-day Ghana, were recruited into the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL). Stationed largely in the garrison town of Purworejo, Central Java, these soldiers married Javanese and Indo-European women, creating a unique Afro-Indo community historically known as the Belanda Hitam (Black Dutchmen). Despite their distinct West African roots, they became deeply embedded in the Indische culture. Following Indonesian independence, many of these families repatriated to the Netherlands, settling in towns like Vianen. This typographic piece honors their specific, enduring legacy—a proud intersection of African heritage and Indische identity that remains a vital thread in our diaspora today.
