Belanda Hitam Braided Roots Sticker

The Belanda Hitam (Afro-Indo) community carries a unique tri-continental history. Between 1831 and 1872, around 3,000 West African men, mostly from Elmina, Ghana, were recruited into the colonial army in the Dutch East Indies. Settling primarily in the garrison town of Purworejo, Central Java, they married Javanese and Indo women, creating a distinct Afro-Indo culture. Following Indonesian independence, many of these families repatriated to the Netherlands, forming close-knit communities in towns like Vianen. For the third generation, this sticker symbolizes the braiding of these three distinct threads—Ghanaian, Indonesian, and Dutch—into a single, unbreakable identity. The Sankofa bird reminds us that claiming our future requires honoring all our roots.
