In the late 1950s and early 1960s, thousands of Indische Nederlanders embarked on a second migration. After initially resettling in the Netherlands following Indonesian independence, many families sought new beginnings in the United States, sponsored by churches and the Pastore-Walter Act of 1958. Southern California—specifically towns like Bellflower, Whittier, and La Habra—became the vibrant heart of the Amerindo community. Here, among the palm trees and mid-century diners, Indo culture was fiercely preserved. Weekend picnics, community recreation clubs, and the sharing of spekkoek and sambal kept the heritage alive an ocean away from both Java and The Hague. This design honors the resilience of the second wave, blending the Dutch windmill with the California palm.
