In the late 1950s and early 1960s, thousands of Indische Nederlanders undertook a second migration. Following the Pastore-Walter Act of 1958, many families who had initially repatriated to the Netherlands crossed the Atlantic to build new lives in the United States. Settling deeply into Southern California—in towns like Bellflower, Whittier, and La Habra—as well as Grand Rapids, Michigan, they became the 'Amerindos'. This twice-migrated community kept their heritage alive through weekend picnics, community recreation clubs, and the fierce preservation of language and cuisine. This design honors the resilience of the Second Wave: a community that wove the threads of the Dutch East Indies and the Netherlands into the fabric of the American dream.
