"Adoeh, Koud Hè?" Ceramic Mug

Between 1945 and 1965, around 300,000 Indos and their families made the month-long journey by ocean liner from the tropical heat of the archipelago to the freezing, grey winters of the Netherlands. Stepping off ships like the Johan van Oldenbarnevelt into snow or sleet was a profound physical shock. "Adoeh, koud hè?" (Oh my, cold isn't it?) became the unofficial catchphrase of a generation adapting to contract pensions, winter coats, and central heating. Today, being a koukleum (someone who gets cold easily) is a universally recognized, affectionate trait in Indo families. This mug is a warm nod to the resilience of our grandparents who braved the chill so we could thrive.
