Every year on 15 August, the Indische community gathers at the Indisch Monument in The Hague to commemorate the official end of World War II in the Dutch East Indies. We wear the melati (Jasminum sambac) as our symbol of respect, resilience, and remembrance. Its five white petals honor all victims of the Japanese occupation, the camps, the turbulent Bersiap period, and the subsequent forced repatriation.
