Maluku 1951: The Temporary Stay That Lasted
Twelve and a half thousand Moluccan soldiers and their families were told they would be in the Netherlands for six months.
In 1951 the Dutch government shipped 12,500 Moluccan KNIL soldiers and their families to the Netherlands, promising a short stay before a return to an independent South Moluccan republic. The republic never came. The families were housed in former camps — Westerbork among them — and told to wait.
They waited a generation. The woonoorden became villages; the tifa drum, the church choir and the cakalele dance moved indoors and stayed. Third-generation Moluccans today run festivals, restaurants and football clubs across the country.
