De Melati: The Jasmine Flower of Remembrance and Rebirth
Why the five-petal Jasminum sambac remains the sacred symbol of resilience for Indische Nederlanders across generations.
Every 15th of August, thousands gather at the Indisch Monument in The Hague wearing a small white jasmine — the Melati. It marks the end of the Second World War in Asia and honors all who suffered in the Japanese camps, during the Bersiap, and on the long journey to the Netherlands.
In Javanese tradition the Melati is the flower of purity and weddings; in the diaspora it became the flower of memory. It is pinned to lapels, laid at monuments, and printed on the garments of a generation that refuses to forget.
